Super Beaver Moon 2024: what you need to know about this November full moon

This is the last Super Moon of the year 2024. Friday November 15, 2024 at 10:28 p.m., the Beaver full moon will light up the sky. This Super Moon has the particularity of appearing a little larger in the sky and brighter than average.

The term Super Moon is not an astronomy term, but was invented by astrologer Richard Nolle. It designates the moment when the passage of the perigee of the Moon, that is to say the point closest to the Earth in the orbit of the Moon, coincides with the full moon.

The Supermoon will reach its peak next Friday at 10:28 p.m. It is advisable to look for a place with a clear horizon, far from light pollution to better observe it. “It appears 7% larger and about 16% brighter than an average full moon,” says the Starwalk app, adding that “to the naked eye, the difference is very subtle, if not invisible.”

The Beaver Moon is a name inherited from Native American tribes, who used to give names to full moons according to the months. The November full moon has been associated with the beaver, because it is in November that these animals begin to prepare for the cold. They build dams and stock up on food. The nickname could also come from the fact that during this period, hunters traditionally set beaver traps to collect their fur.

After November 15, you will have to wait until November 24, 2026 to observe the next Beaver Moon. “In 2025, the November full moon will be just after the Harvest Moon and will therefore, according to tradition, be called the Hunters' Moon,” notes Starwalk. It will take place on November 5. As for the next full moon – and last of the year – it is expected on December 15.
