You can’t believe everything you read online. Take the rumors about Tom Cruise wanting Texas native Glen Powell to replace him in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, for instance.
On Tuesday’s episode of “The Pat McAfee Show,” host Pat McAfee decided the only way to put an end to the online speculation was to ask the “Twisters” star directly.
The ESPN commentator then proceeded to FaceTime Powell and told him about the “Mission: Impossible” rumors before saying, “Congratulations, brother.”
In response, Powell turned on his charm, telling McAfee, “My mom would never let me do that,” before jokingly saying a job with the “Mission: Impossible“ franchise would be ”the worst gig in town” and a “death trap” due to its stunt-filled nature.
Despite Powell‘s coy response to McAfee’s question, others on the show labeled the actor’s answer as a “misdirection.” Either way, there’s still a chance he and Cruise could link up for an action movie. The two actors previously worked together on the 2022 film, “Top Gun: Maverick,” after all.
And Powell didn‘t replace Cruise’s role in the “Top Gun” sequel, either. Perhaps there will be a “Mission: Impossible“ film starring both actors where Crusie plays his original role and Powell portrays one of his mentees, similar to their respective roles in ”Top Gun: Maverick.”
Per usual, time will tell. Powell is likely busy at the moment as Hulu gears up for the future release of “Chad Powers,” a comedy series that features Powell as — you guessed it — Chad Powers.
