The alcoholic beverages sector does not have the capacity to absorb a new tax increase, whether direct or indirect. In addition, the impact of such a measure would extend to the entire sector: hotels, cafes and restaurants, glass industry, etc. Numerous business closures and job destruction would be feared.
The same goes for proposed taxes on sweet products which would jeopardize key products of French gastronomy and threaten the sustainability of the sector.
If the fight against harmful behavior is a real public health issue, it is more a matter of preventive measures than of the introduction of taxes. “Behavioral” or not, a tax increase remains an additional levy.
