Strikes: SNCF, farmers, airlines… the social movements announced are numerous, what should we expect?

the essential
Several calls for strikes were launched at the end of the year. Airline pilots, farmers, and railway workers are soon organizing several days of mobilization.

The social weather promises to be particularly busy at the end of 2024. Storms first in the skies of industry and mass distribution, after the social plans announced by Michelin and Auchan. Railway workers and players in the agricultural sector also promise actions and demonstrations, while the government advocates budgetary austerity for the years to come, planning 60 billion euros in efforts.

Pilots on strike November 14

A day of strike and demonstrations was announced for this Thursday, November 14 by the National Union of Airline Pilots (SNPL). The latter wish to gather in front of the National Assembly: professionals in the sector openly criticize the government project aimed at increasing taxation in the field of air transport, as part of the finance bill for 2025.

This Sunday, November 10, a press release was sent by other unions in the sector – UNSA transport, UNSA PNC, CFE-CGC FNEMA, UNAC, SNPNC-FO and FEETS-FO – calling “all employees of the airline sector to come and demonstrate their disagreement with this tax that is deadly for jobs before the National Assembly on November 14.” This strike action should, however, not result in significant disruptions to the flight schedules of the main airlines. “We should be able to transport all customers,” declared Alexandre Boissy, deputy general director of Air -KLM, for example.

Farmers mobilized on November 15

It's been less than a year since farmers hit France with their anger, multiplying blockades and other large-scale actions for weeks. At the end of 2024, anger is still brewing: wheat harvests have been poor, professionals in the sector fear a free trade treaty between the EU and Mercosur and many livestock farms have been hit by bluetongue . The latter also want clarification on the guaranteed loans, announced by the State, “short-term loans for economic difficulties”.

At the call of the majority unions in the sector – the Young Farmers (JA) and the National Federation of Agricultural Operators' Unions (FNSEA) – farmers are therefore invited to take to the streets next Friday, November 15.

Railway workers on strike on November 21, then December 11 until the end of the year

Storm warnings at stations across the country. Railway workers denounce the announced dismantling of Fret SNCF and protest against the opening of regional lines to competition. Through the announced strike action, it is above all the management of the SNCF which is being singled out. But the end-of-year walkout risks having serious consequences for users, many of whom use the train for the end-of-year celebrations.

Next Thursday, November 21, the social partners have planned to meet the management of the railway group. On this occasion, a call for a strike was launched: it will take effect from Wednesday November 20 at 7 p.m., before ending (normally) on Friday November 22 at 8 a.m.

According to the main railway unions – the CGT-Cheminots, the Unsa-Ferroviaire, Sud-Rail and the CFDT-Cheminots – this is an “ultimatum” before an extension of the strike movement “longer and stronger in December. Last Saturday, November 9, the SNCF unions therefore called for an “unlimited” strike from December 11.
