“You make me nervous, I can’t do it” – Libero Quotidiano

After the victory in -Bercy, Alexander Zverev has risen to second place in the ATP ranking and, with Alcaraz in precarious conditions in Turin, is a candidate to be the only rival able to counteract Sinner’s final victory at ATP Finals.

The German, in fact, made his debut with a victory (6-4; 6-4) against Rublev at the ATP Finals. A few moments of embarrassment, however, in the post-match interview with ex-British colleague Laura Robsontoday a television commentator and number 27 on the women’s circuit. She says, “You just told me you weren’t even sweating out there.” He was immediately forced to correct his remarks: “That’s not what I said. I shook your hand, let’s be clear with the spectators and you complained about a handshake that was too formal. Then I tried to give you two kisses on the cheeks. You said ‘no, you’re sweaty away from me.’ And then I said, ‘you complain about too many things’.”

Not happy, then, Zverev took things further: “I mean, I think that Andrey is one of the most aggressive players on tour. So if I hadn’t been careful with him, the match could have gone in the opposite direction very, very quickly. I was happy with my game. And I can’t wait to play the next games, I hope I can still improve on some things. I don’t think this match was perfect, to be honest. I think there are still some things that can be improved. I think everyone, even Jannik, will tell you that they still want to improve this year. I mean, he had a near-perfect year too. And, you know, you always have to find ways to improve. I think that in Paris, perhaps I played the last few games better than here. But, you know, again, this is the first game.” In the end, Zverev didn’t even spare his interlocutor the embarrassment: “You make me nervous during these interviews. I really can’t handle it. I start mumbling and I don’t know what to say anymore. Should we stop here? No we can go on. This is the most embarrassing interview I’ve had this year.” At that point Robson closed icily: “You have two days to think about the next one.” And meanwhile Sinner enjoys such a nervous rival…
