“Fall of the coalition: the date of the new election is set”announces Frankfurter Rundschau, this Tuesday, November 12, on its live broadcast dedicated to the German political crisis. Social Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz will seek the confidence of the lower house of the German Parliament before Christmas, and not in January, as he had initially announced. Early elections should then be organized on February 23, 2025, in order to determine the composition of the next government.
The news closes the debates which ignited the German political scene on the electoral calendar. The Christian right of the CDU-CSU demanded a rapid departure of the current leader, whose coalition between the social democrats, the Greens and the liberals collapsed following the dismissal of his Finance Minister.
But conservatives were not the only ones calling for such a change in agenda. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party also demanded snap elections, says the German wave. And for good reason: “since the formation of the coalition at the end of December 2021, the AfD has been attacking the government with all its might.” The German channel asks:
“Will early elections play into the hands of the AfD?
