Chinese police said 35 people were killed and 43 injured after a motorist rammed his car into people exercising at a sports center in Zhuhai, southern China, on Monday evening.
“A serious and vicious attack took place at the Zhuhai Sports Center where a suspect drove a car into people who were training, leaving 35 people dead and 43 injured,” police said. this Tuesday in a press release.
The 62-year-old driver was arrested, according to law enforcement. President Xi Jinping called in a statement on Tuesday for the driver to be punished in accordance with Chinese law.
The incident is facing harsh censorship as the country's largest aviation exhibition opened in Zhuhai on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. A first assessment of the tragedy was therefore announced the day after the accident.
As of Tuesday morning, searches for information about the incident were heavily censored on Chinese social networks like Weibo, notes CBS News. Several Chinese media articles, published Monday evening, have also been deleted.
China has recently been the scene of several attacks in which random people appear to be targeted. In October, a 50-year-old man was arrested for trying to use a knife to attack children at a Beijing school. Five people were injured. In September, three people were killed in a knife attack in Shanghai.
