The first winter offensive of the season arrived this Tuesday, November 12, 2024 just after the long Armistice bank holiday weekend.

The first snowflakes on the Alps

Snowflakes fell in several Alpine sectors, in Isère, in the Hautes-Alpes, in the southern Alps but also in the northern Alps. A cold drop causes a drop in temperatures and allows the first snowflakes of the year to fall on several departments such as Savoie or Haute-Savoie.

The Alpine slopes unfortunately remained snowless as mid-November approaches. Let the inhabitants (and resorts) of the massifs rest assured, the snow arrived this Tuesday.

An episode of sharp drop in temperatures affects a large western half of the Alps and causes a lowering to 1,500 meters of altitude of the rain/snow limit, which until then stagnated 300 meters higher. Météo predicts in its bulletin dedicated to the Alps the first snowfalls “between 1,200 and 1,400 meters above sea level” this Tuesday.

Snow has already fallen (in particular) in Courchevel, Val d'Isère, Saint-Martin de Belleville, Valfréjus, Chamrousse, Auris, La Grave, Chamonix, La Flécas, Les Plagnes, Valloire…

From 5 to 20 centimeters of snow depending on the sector

Météo France warns that snowfall will be “a little more frequent over a good eastern half of Savoie”.

“Since Monday, the accumulation of snow has not exceeded 1 to 3 cm above 1,800 meters, except near Italy, in Haute-Maurienne and in Sud-Maurienne, where we could have 5 to 10 cm of snow,” continues the forecast bulletin. It is in the southern Alps that it will snow the most with 20 cm expected at its peak.

Forecasters note, however, that the snowy and gray episode will be brief at the start of the week and that sunshine and higher temperatures are expected in the Alps from this Wednesday.
