Watch out for strong storms in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur this Tuesday

This Tuesday

Between 3 and 12 p.m.this brief, but strong degradation will concern the Alpes-Maritimes. Stormy showers are expected as well as a strengthening of the easterly wind to 80 km/h in gusts between and , requiring your vigilance if you are along the coast.

From 12 to 6 p.m.the episode will reach its peak of intensity: between the center of and the west of Bouches-du-Rhône (from to ), heavy stormy rains will sweep through these departments.

From 6 p.m.Languedoc will in turn be affected by these rains which will have meanwhile lost their intensity and will not be of an aggravating nature. In the east of Bouches-du-Rhône, on the other hand, to the east of , the stormy rains will still be significant, even if they will gradually lose intensity and disappear after 9 p.m.

Up to 70 mm of rain in a few hours

It's between Toulon et Marseille that the rainfall accumulations are expected to be the heaviest. Locally, in the space of 1 to 3 hours, accumulations could reach 40 to 70 mm, corresponding to 2 weeks of rain. These brief but intense rains are likely to cause risks of urban runoff as well as very local flooding (the Huveaume in Marseille).

Brief but heavy snowfall in the mountains

With the passage of this disturbance, snowfall will occur from 1600 meters in the south of the Alps. In the Mercantour massif, we expect up to 40 cm of snow above 2500 meters. An effect d’isothermie is possible and locally, the rain/snow limit could go lower, to almost 1000 meters above sea level in the north of the Var and 1400 m below Isola 2000. This snow could temporarily hinder traffic on the secondary road network 'altitude. In the space of 1 hour, 10 cm of snow may fall which will melt quickly in the afternoon below 1500 meters altitude.

In the evening, while the mistral and the east wind will begin to weaken, it is the tramontane which will suddenly strengthen and can reach 100 km/h in gusts in the Roussillon plain during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Very degraded sea state offshore

With the strengthening of the tramontane in the Gulf of Lion and the easterly wind between the Gulf of Genoa and off the coast of Provence, conditions at sea will be very choppy. Waves of 3 to 4 meters are expected off the Var coast. Boat trips should be avoided.
