Excellent debut at the ATP Doubles Finals for the Bolelli-Vavassori pair, who beat the pair formed by the Indian Bopanna and the Australian Ebden with a peremptory 6-2, 6-3, in just under an hour.
The Italians lead 6-2 after the first set, which started in a lightning-fast manner with two service rounds held scoreless, punctuated by a break on Bopanna’s serve. The opposing pair then obtained the first point on the Australian’s serve, recovering from 0-30, then it was Simone Bolelli’s turn who held serve without conceding even a point to the Indo-Australian pair.
The Azzurri were close to a second break on Bopanna’s serve who however managed to hold serve by recovering from 0-30 and 30-40, winning the game on the deciding point and reducing the deficit to 4-2. Another scoreless game, this time on Vavassori’s serve, immediately brought the two Italians to 5-2. The decisive break for the 6-2 came on Ebden’s serve, thanks to a series of lightning responses from the Azzurri.
The second set began along the lines of the first, with the Azzurri leading 1-0 on their serve and Bopanna managing to hold his own for 1-1 and Vavassori still scoring in his turn of serve, albeit with some more difficult than at the beginning, conceding two points in response to the opponents (as many as they had been in the entire first set).
The break for the Azzurri came in Bopanna’s second serve, for the momentary 3-1, which immediately became 4-1 with Bolelli’s serve held scoreless. New turn of serve held with difficulty, at the deciding point, for Bopanna, but the score moved to 4-2, and then immediately to 5-2 with the serve easily held by Vavassori. Ebden at serve left no points for the Azzurri and won 5-3. The point of the decisive 6-3 came on Bolelli’s turn of service, held scoreless and closed with an ace.
