Ridley Scott signs a sequel to his more complex revolutionary epic, At the Heart of Imperial Power

Maximus (Russell Crowe) died at the end of Gladiatorhis son Lucius (Paul Mescal) takes over in an adventure as epic as it explores the mysteries of a corrupt power. We find Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Graccus (Derek Jacobi) but also General Acarius (Pedro Pascal), from the first opus, alongside Lucius who threatens the two-headed power of the emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger).

Ridley Scott's ancient Rome loses none of its splendor in this sequel, adding a Shakespearean note, where power and passion go hand in hand until death. Put on your gladiator costume from Wednesday November 13, 2024 to go to the theaters.

Set sixteen years later Gladiatorwe find the son of Maximus, Lucius, in Numidia, an ancient kingdom which has now disappeared, in the midst of the Roman invasion of this country in northern Africa. Taken prisoner, Lucius is taken to Rome, where his talents as a warrior earn him a place as a gladiator for the circus games. Ignorant of his origins, he is recognized by his mother Lucia who tells him where he comes from, of her love affair with Maximus. Disgusted by the power exercised by the brother emperors Geta and Caracalla, Lucius will work to restore glory to a decadent Rome.

Ridley Scott reconnects with the splendor and grandeur of Gladiatorthe adjectives corresponding to “strength and honor”, the Praetorian motto in the film. Russell Crowe gave way to Paul Mescal and if this second opus did not necessarily benefit from the change, more youthful, it corresponds to the role. Connie Nielsen still has the grace of an ancient Roman, and Derek Jacobi is perfect as an influential senator.

The intrigues are going well, and Lucius' journey, from the refuge of his Numidia to the mysteries of power in Rome, is most epic. Note the beautiful naval attack at the beginning of the film, a scene unseen since Cleopatra (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1963).

Ridley Scott returns to the breath of the epic while cherishing the intimacy of the interior scenes. The sumptuous imagery of its landscapes, sets and costumes does not overwhelm the storyline, always demanding in its plots and subplots, where secondary characters like Macrinus (Denzel Washington) are essential. Magnificent and bouncy, this Gladiator II is in respectful continuity of its model: fascinating and exciting.
