Laurens Sweeck rides solo to victory in Niel’s Jaarmarktcross, Eli Iserbyt crashes in the mud but still finishes fourth

Laurens Sweeck (Crelan-Corendon) won the Jaarmarktcross, the third round of the season in the Superprestige, on Monday in Niel. Sweeck won on Armistice ahead of Spaniard Felipe Orts and Niels Vandeputte. Eli Iserbyt had to settle for fourth place. The 30-year-old Sweeck already won the round of the Exact Cross in Essen earlier this season. Vandeputte takes the lead in the Superprestige rankings.

Laurens Sweeck took the holeshot with Toon Vandebosch, Niels Vandeputte, Eli Iserbyt, Felipe Orts and Emiel Verstrynge as chasers. The (at that time) leader in the Superprestige standings, Joran Wyseure, soon suffered a puncture and dropped many places. Sweeck started the second round with a small lead. Behind him were Niels Vandeputte, Eli Iserbyt, Felipe Orts and Emiel Verstrynge. Toon Vandebosch preceded Michael Vanthourenhout, Ryan Kamp and Witse Meeussen, who followed in seventeen seconds.

Halfcross, Sweeck had a lead of thirteen seconds over Vandeputte. A trio with Orts, Iserbyt and Vanthourenhout already had 21 seconds. After 37 minutes of cross, the Belgian champion joined Vandeputte. Orts also joined them. Then the heavens opened and the course turned into more mud. Sweeck started the very last lap with a lead of only fifteen seconds over Iserbyt, seventeen seconds over Vandeputte and nineteen seconds over Orts.

This trio got stuck together at the material station. The lights went out at Iserbyt while Sweeck rode to his second victory this season after Essen in Niel. Behind him, Felipe Orts let Niels Vandeputte down in the battle for the closest place of honor. Laurens Sweeck succeeds Eli Iserbyt as final laureate of the Jaarmarktcross.
