who really wants war?

It is said in Algiers that the East of Eden is a bastion of virtue which only seeks to spread peace and love in the region. However, Morocco dares to disturb this harmony by pointing out the hidden intentions of the capos of Algiers.

The scene unfolds as the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, solemnly accuses Algeria of wanting to engulf the region in conflict.

Algerian regime: between provocations and strategic paranoia

An outing which, obviously, caused teeth and weapons to cringe on the other side of the border. But what do we blame Algeria for, this model of stability? A threatening speech here, a refused census there, and above all, the chronic obsession with access to the Atlantic, an ambition which seems to surpass even the wildest dreams of Hollywood screenwriters.

What Morocco dared to emphasize during the royal speech of November 6 is this strategy of permanent diversion of Algiers which uses the question of Western Sahara to divert the attention of its “domestic problems”. But let it be said! Whoever touches it gets pricked: the Kingdom, a true geo-politico-diplomatic cactus, jealously watches over its borders and its secrets, no offense to the two seniles in diapers next door.

The timing of the Moroccan accusations is not innocent: they closely follow the impressive military parade of November 1, celebrating 70 years of the Algerian revolution. A parade which, let us remember, only aimed to display defensive toys, if we are to believe President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Because, of course, the National People’s Army (ANP) is the very quintessence of the defensive – a term which here takes all the flexibility that semantics can offer.

Despite this, Nacer Bourita nevertheless threw a wrench in the pond by warning of Algeria’s “warlike inclinations”. Let the Algerians rest assured: Morocco is not fooled! Military movements and hedging strategies, even under the label of national defense, no longer fool anyone. Because finally, if Algeria was so peaceful, why these accumulations of weapons and these secret alliances?

When hypocrisy borders on cynicism

Morocco may well be accused of playing the provocation card, but the reality is much more nuanced. Indeed, while the Kingdom continues to strengthen itself on the international scene, garnering recognition of the sovereignty of the Sahara, the Algerian rhetoric does not change: accusations, victimization and eternal litanies about the Moroccan threat. You could almost see a hint of jealousy there.

Nor should we forget the famous Moroccan air strike which, according to the Algerian version, cost the lives of three “innocent” traders. An act of pure aggression, claimed Algiers, which could, in its infinite goodness, have made it a casus belli, but did not do so, because, we understood, the regime of the ill-named next door would not don’t look for war.

No, Algiers prefers to point the finger at Moroccan “crises” while turning a blind eye to its own streets inflamed by protests and strikes. Yes, Morocco is going through a complex economic period, with desperate attempts by young people seeking to reach Europe. However, he is slowly and surely recovering. But then, what can we say about the Algeria of petrodollars, where young people dream just as much of exile. Normal ! Because the power and wealth of the country remain concentrated in the hands of an irremovable military elite and the economy is staggering under the weight of hazardous management?

“Defensive” doctrine in the attack on logic

What more can we say about these military parades and the speeches on sovereignty in which a darker reality is hidden: that of a regime which fears the external enemy as much as its own population! The layered Chengriha, which has already tasted the honeyed cactus of the Moroccan sands, with its sharp thorns which deter any attempt at intrusion, seems to have a short memory. Forgotten the stay, thorns all included and smells of straw in Moroccan jails. What ingratitude!

However, the real game played by the two seniles on the balcony of the Muppets show made in Algeria is that of intimidation disguised as a defensive doctrine. That said, in this game, Morocco understood that it had to shout louder than the other to be heard. And, if crying out for war allows us to avoid the real one, then let the partition continue. Morocco, in all its components, is ready to play it entirely.
