On the occasion of the Armistice celebrations this Monday, the SLFP-Defense union calls on the negotiators of the next federal government not to weaken Defense in the current geopolitical context. “Our soldiers do not deserve a betrayal disguised as tribute“, declared on this symbolic date Chris Huybrechts, the president of the union.
While fallen soldiers are honored on this date, the union believes that “an unprecedented threat” weighs on the future of Defense.
“The future political coalition, supposed to guarantee the security and well-being of our country, seems determined to sabotage Defense reconstruction efforts. Rather than supporting the ongoing transformation, this coalition plans to deliver a fatal blow to our armed forces by willfully ignoring the growing threats to our national and international security by seeking to implement ill-considered measures“, denounces the SLFP-Defense in a press release.
Honoring fallen soldiers also means respecting those who continue to serve
“While La Défense strives to rebuild itself in the face of an increasingly tense geopolitical context and a period of fragile peace, the stated desire to misuse its resources is not only irresponsible, but also disrespectful of those who have sacrificed their life for the homeland“, also castigates the union.
Its president Chris Huybrechts points out in particular that attacking the status of defense personnel could cause “irreversible damage to defense“. “It is imperative that we strengthen and improve the defense today, before it is too late“, he pleads.
The SLFP-Defense says it is launching a solemn appeal to political decision-makers to “strengthen rather than weaken the operational capabilities of our defense and its personnel“. “Honoring fallen soldiers also means respecting those who continue to serve“, argues the union this Armistice Day.
