Last night, FC Barcelona conceded their second defeat of the season in La Liga against Real Sociedad (2-0). If this Basque victory is far from being illogical, it is still marred by an incident of play which could have changed everything since Robert Lewandowski had found the net shortly before the first quarter of an hour of play. However, the VAR decided to cancel this goal not without creating a vast controversy since it would appear on the images that it was the foot of Nayef Aguerd, ahead of that of the Pole, which was taken into account.
The Technical Commission of Referees validates its decision!
Enough to provoke the incomprehension of the Blaugranas, and in particular of Hansi Flick: “I told the referee it was a bad decision, but it's not his fault and I know that. I wasn't very angry. Just a little. If it had been valid, it would have been another match for us” he declared in comments reported by Mundo Deportivo, followed in his thoughts by Marc Casado: “La Liga will have to review whether it is Lewandowski's foot or not. It would be serious if they disallowed a goal that was actually legal. I haven't seen it live, but they told me about it. Sooner or later we will know if there was an offside.”
Finally, Iñaki Peña also demanded accountability: “If there is a possible error in the marking of Lewandowski's foot, an error so clear and so serious, let La Liga act because that's what VAR is for, that's what the lines are for 'they launch and if there was an error, let it be demonstrated, investigate and act” he said.
However, still according to the media, the Technical Commission of Referees would consider the decision “correct”. No error of interpretation would have been made and we would not have at all appreciated a possible questioning of the identity of the offside player. The images would thus have been examined by ten different cameras to check the reliability of the system for a technology supposed to identify these “millimetric” offsides. From there to putting an end to the controversy? Nothing is less certain…
