What a spectacle of nature: instead of sun and sand, there is snow for the first time in recorded history in the desert of Saudi Arabia.

There are places where heavy rain and snow are major events, and others where people experience it for the first time in their lives.

When we think of Saudi Arabia, we think of heat, sun and sand – but it's different now. For the first time since scientific weather records began, it snowed in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi meteorological service, however, is far from euphoric. It issued warnings of continued severe weather in the coming days.

But Saudi Arabia is not the only country experiencing unusual weather patterns. The UAE is also under the influence of similar weather systems and winter conditions.
