Ruben Amorim saw Sporting’s victory this Sunday, his last game in charge of the “lions”, with a metaphor for his time in Alvalade. Sporting de Braga started winning 2-0, but Sporting came back and scored four goals in the second half. At the end of the game, the now Manchester United coach says that there was “no way” to lose the game and that all former players “were on the field”.
“It’s telling a story in 90 minutes that we all live, it’s not just my story. A lot of suffering, of fighting until the end”, he began by saying in the flash interview with Sport TV, mentioning the added-time goals from Coates – who this time was replaced in that role by Harder.
Regarding the game, Ruben Amorim also said that the team “always wanted more” and that in the last 20 minutes the freshness of Sporting’s squad was noticed in relation to the Braga team, which played in European competitions last Thursday.
Regarding his history at Sporting, he stated that this is a “special club”.
“It was much more than I could have expected (…) The results were not perfect. We could have won more, but we didn’t expect to win so much. It was an unbelievable adventure. The connection with people, what we experienced, the internships, the trips… I wanted everyone to experience this. I was always very happy, I never felt alone. A coach placing 4th and never feeling alone is special. In this aspect, Sporting is a special club,” he said.
At the time of the third and fourth goals, Ruben Amorim’s emotion was visible, celebrating the goal with all the players and the coach also said that he experienced this Sunday’s game “much more” than last Tuesday’s, against Manchester. City, and was saddened by Pedro Gonçalves’ injury.
“It hurt me more to see Pote crying and leaving. I’m sure he made the effort and played because it was my last game, I feel like he’s a little angry with me. I felt like everyone realized it was important to go to the parade of the teams to win. If they continue to win… They will have a great coach and that will help them move forward.”
Amorim says he will go to Manchester with the desire to win and the same attitude he showed at Sporting. “I certainly won’t lose my essence, I would lose my coaching career faster. It’s going to be difficult, I have no illusions. But it’s whatever it has to be.”
