Flamengo fans 'forgive' Gabigol and ask for the attacker to stay: 'He's an idol'

Attempted doping fraud, photo with another club's shirt, bad phase. Controversies aside, Flamengo fans seem to have forgiven striker Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol, who was decisive in the Copa do Brasil final against Atlético-MG.

The red-black fan's relationship with the 28-year-old player is one of ups and downs. Lately, more lows than highs. Even so, Gabigol demonstrated that he had found good football again under the command of Filipe Luís and scored two goals in the final, at Maracanã. Arrascaeta increased in Rio, while Alan Kardec decreased for Galo.

On the way back, Gonzalo Plato scored the only goal that secured Mengão's fifth championship. For Flamengo fans, Gabriel Barbosa is practically forgiven for the controversies and deserves to remain at the club.

“I think Gabigol has to renew, he is Flamengo's idol, he gave us two Libertadores. They're playing poorly, they don't deserve it, but they have to renew. Pay less, but renew, because Filipe Luis is pulling him”, said fan Guilherme Chaves, pointing out the player’s high salary.

“I think Gabigol renews, the fans are like him, he gave up, he put on a Corinthians shirt, but he deserves a renewal”, analyzed Flamengo player Bruno Chagas.

With a contract in force until December this year, Gabigol's future at Flamengo remains a mystery. The striker resisted the club's offers and gave indications that he could leave Rubro-Negro at the end of the season.

President of Flamengo, Rodolfo Landim acknowledged the player's drop in performance but stated, after the final of the Copa do Brasil, that Gabigol's stay at the club depends on him: “We are willing to make that bet”.
