FC Twente will take on Ajax on Sunday afternoon (here can be followed live). Joseph Oosting’s team played a strong match against OGC Nice on Thursday evening, but forgot to reward themselves (2-2). Ajax did that and won convincingly against Maccabi Tel Aviv (5-0). Oosting appeared in front of ESPN’s camera prior to the match.
Oosting was asked to explain his choices regarding the changes in his line-up: “With Mees (Hilgers) and Max (Bruns), it mainly has to do with the physical aspect. Mees was of course not fit, but he is now. Max has played a lot of matches. played, but is now back. In addition, it is also partly tactical.”
Sem Steijn, the Eredivisie’s top scorer, was also missing last week. He is back on the bench against Ajax: “Sem has been ill. He has trained differently. We have to be careful with him, he has not played or trained for a while. We have to see how long he can keep it up.”
Oosting was also asked about the draw in France: “We did a great job away to Nice. Ultimately, of course, you look at the result, but the way we played football was good. In the long term, that will lead to results. But everyone is I’m sick of it when you’re 0-2 ahead and you don’t win.”
He did not want to say much about Wout Weghorst, who knows Oosting well. The Ajax striker seemed to be on his way to FC Twente for some time last summer: “They can vary a lot. We have to be prepared for them to be able to use Weghorst with a long ball. I know him well. I prefer to look at my own team and players, but it’s clear he’s a good striker. We don’t all have to be gray mice. I haven’t had any contact with him in the build-up to this match. I’m busy.”
