S Ve Shekher, Karthi, Suresh Krissna, and others pay tribute to Delhi Ganesh

Condolences have been pouring in for the death of veteran actor Delhi Ganesh. Several celebrities, friends and family have been visiting his Ramapuram residence since Sunday morning to pay their last respects to the beloved star.

Ganesh’s son Mahadevan confirmed about his father’s demise on his social media handle. The Nayakan actor reportedly passed away due to age-related illnesses on Saturday night.

Among the first to offer condolences were prominent actors Karthi and Sivakumar, along with several others from the film fraternity, including Senthil, Radha Ravi, and Santhana Bharathi.

In a tribute to the late actor, the Ponniyin Selvan actor wrote on social media, “Saddened by the demise of Delhi Ganesh sir. His iconic roles in numerous films and his ability to bring to life unforgettable characters on screen will forever be etched in the history of Tamil cinema. You will be deeply missed, sir.”

Karthi, accompanied by his father and veteran actor Sivakumar, visited Ganesh’s residence to pay their respects on Sunday morning.

Actor Rajinikanth wrote that he was deeply saddened to hear about the actor’s passing. “My friend Delhi Ganesh is a wonderful man. Amazing actor. My condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti,” he wrote on his X handle.

Actor Sriman, who also shared a close bond with the actor, remembered Ganesh as a “versatile actor” and expressed his grief, saying, “Physically we will miss you, but your performance and your screen presence will live forever. Miss you sir.”

Director Suresh Krissna, who has worked with Ganesh in several films, shared his grief following the news of his death. “Delhi Ganesh Sir’s passing is a profound loss,” Krissna wrote, adding, “From working together with KB Sir to his remarkable roles in films like Aaaah, Sangamamand Babahe was both a phenomenal actor and a dear friend. He will forever live on in my films and in the legacy of our cinema,” he wrote on his X handle.

Actor S Ve Shekher, who has also shared screen space with Delhi Ganesh in many films, took to his social media handles to pen an emotional note. “Dear Delhi Ganesh, my sincere prayers for your good soul to attain Sathgadhi. Ohm Shanti. You will be living in this digital media. Ohm Shanti,” he wrote.

Vijay Sethupathi wrote that he was pained to know about the actor’s demise. “The void he leaves behind will be hard to fill. My deepest condolences to his family members, friends, and fans,” he added.

Madhavan called Ganesh a “phenomenal actor and an amazing soul”. “He departs for the heavens to entertain them. You will be so sorely missed, sir. Rest in peace for eternity (sic),” he wrote.

Ganesh was born on August 1, 1944 in Tirunelveli. Delhi became a part of Ganesh’s name as he started off as a theatre artist in a Delhi based drama troupe Dakshina Bharata Nataka Sabha. Interestingly, Ganesh served as a part of the Indian Air Force for a decade from 1964-1974 before entering films with K Balachander’s Pattina Pravesam (1976). Balachander gave him the screen name which has etched in audiences mind till date.

Apart from his comic roles, he has played the lead in MA Kaja’s Engamma Maharani (1981) and villain roles in Apoorva Sagotharargal (1989) and Chidambara Ragasiyam (1985). Some of the notable films of his filmography are Sindhu Bhairavi (1985), Michael Madana as Rajan (1990), Sri Raghavendar (1985), Avvai Shanmugi (1996) and Thenali (2001). He won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his performance in after (1979). He was conferred the Kalaimamani title in 1994 by the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The actor who has starred in a whopping 400 films, also ventured into television and short films, continually engaging audiences with his unique style. His cameo as Alfred Pennyworth in the short film ‘What If Batman Was from Chennai’ was especially well received, showcasing his ability to bring depth to even the smallest of roles. His role as a curt old man who holds disgust for his nephew in the segment ‘Bibhatsa – Disgust’ (directed by Vasanth) in the Netflix anthology Navarasa was received with much praise and critical acclaim.

He made his final appearance in Kamal Haasan-Shankar’s Indian 2.

Delhi Ganesh’s funeral is set take place on Monday, November 11.
