Peter Maffay hasn’t quite figured out yet how things will go for him privately and with his family, his wife Hendrikje (37) and their daughter Anouk (6), after saying goodbye to the concert stage. The 75-year-old told the Augsburger Allgemeine that he still had to find out how long he could tolerate his family’s everyday life. And adds with a laugh: “I have the feeling that if I’m there too long, certain areas of tension could arise.”
The rock musician, who lives in Tutzing on Lake Starnberg, says that he can contribute little to life at home and that his talents in everyday life are manageable. “I can’t cook and I’m not really useful around the house. (…) But I’m suitable as a henchman.” He often goes shopping in the supermarket, which he enjoys.
Daughter Anouk has just turned six and will soon be starting school. The rock musician told the Augsburger Allgemeine with a laugh that he was also only partially suitable for a task there, such as the parents’ council. “I don’t know if they can use me there. Once I explain that my time at school was extremely unsuccessful and that I was absent for 185 days in my last school year, then I don’t think that makes me predestined for such a volunteer position.”

Is age an issue for him, as the father of a little girl and with a wife who is 38 years younger? The 75-year-old Maffay says he doesn’t think much about his age, partly because he has a lot to do with young people. “It’s certainly a bit of a break from convention, but I see myself as a rock ‘n’ roller who has nothing to do with such categorizations. This also applies to my relationship, although some people also commented on the age difference when we met. I think that’s unnecessary. If the chemistry is right and the empathy is there, then all other parameters are unimportant.”
And what’s next for him as a musician? “There is nothing concrete yet. But when we sat down with the band recently, we realized that we haven’t been in the studio to produce an album in a long time. That could happen next year. Because of Corona and the last tour, we have a bit of catching up to do.” ■
