Six days after their dismal performance in Lausanne, Servette FC failed to get back to winning ways in the Super League. The Grenat were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Zurich on Saturday in Geneva.
Watched by 11,348 spectators, this clash at the top of the 14th round did not fully meet expectations. With Servette FC dominating at times but experiencing several weak spells, and a rather minimalist performance from FC Zurich, it was difficult to demand more from the match.
This result does not really hinder the SFC. The Grenat were fortunate to equalize just before half-time, thanks to a goal from Timothé Cognat that seemed to come from nowhere. They had initially conceded the opening goal in the 39th minute, when Bledian Krasniqi curled in a strike that Jérémy Frick may have misjudged, arriving a moment too late.
An 80m Run
Dereck Kutesa, who has been called up again to the Swiss national team, could have been the hero of the match, the one to secure victory and temporary first place in the standings for Servette FC. The number 17 first made an impressive 80m run in the 1st minute, coming close to scoring what would have been the goal of the year. He later had three more golden opportunities. Although Yannick Brecher made two excellent saves to deny him, Dereck Kutesa did not demonstrate the desired efficiency in the final act.
With this point, FC Zurich sits alone at the top of the table ahead of Lugano’s trip to Bern on Sunday. In Geneva, FCZ confirmed that their great strength lies in a physical potential rarely seen in Switzerland. There is certainly a lot of muscle and height in Ricardo Moniz’s squad, but they need to play a bit more football.
