“Like gummy bears for the soul”

Almost every morning, Andrea Berg enthuses while talking to her at her home, the Sonnenhof Aspach, she takes photos of the sunrise. Even in summer, when the first rays light up your face at around 5 a.m. “For me, this ritual has something encouraging. Because the rising sun makes me aware that even the darkest times will eventually pass.”

Perhaps it is at best a bit of an exaggeration to describe Andrea Berg, born 58 years ago in Krefeld and a reliable and extremely successful figure in the German hit scene for more than three decades, as one of the nation’s most influential encouragers. With her songs she wants to inspire, give hope and simply brighten people’s days a little. “I’m a pop singer and everyone can go as deep with me as they want,” says Berg. “I think you can feel again, especially with my new album, that my songs are like gummy bears for the soul,” says Andrea Berg. “There are a lot of light, really nice, danceable hits for flirting, like ‘Never say never’ or ‘That’s not fair’. But there are also the very quiet, sometimes sad moments on the album, like “At some point it’s too late”. “You are the compass” is also a very important number for me. And I also hear from the fans that they can hold on to these songs to some extent.”

The man at her side

“You are the compass” is the song for her Uli, says Andrea Berg. Ulrich Ferber, hotelier and sports manager, has been the man at her side for 21 years. In the piece, the singer even claims that he is the person “I really like everything about”. The compass, says Berg, “in this song is not the butterfly-like falling in love or the fact that you can’t keep your hands off each other when you’re first in love. The compass means: not letting go of the hand that you always hold as a newly in love couple, even in difficult times. For me that is true and pure love. Enduring together and getting through together. And then to still say “The two of us together are the middle and we can find our way out of every labyrinth”. It’s about being able to weather any storm because we have arrived at a more mature love. This also means that sometimes you say: ‘He’s so annoying to me that I could shoot him on the moon’.” She feels absolutely accepted in her marriage, says Andrea Berg, whose daughter Lena from a previous relationship is now in her mid-twenties and has studied business psychology. The couple have built a wonderful life and increasingly enjoy taking a more relaxed approach to things, spontaneously driving into town for ice cream or “packing two beers in their backpack and sitting by the lake.”

“Love is simply unpredictable”

But doesn’t it worry the husband when Andrea sings in the song “That’s not fair” about a man “who can be dangerous to me”? No, she says, because this story about a couple who immediately fall in love with each other was also inspired by Uli and her. “He suddenly stood there 21 years ago. The message is: Love is simply unpredictable.” And although love must always be free, Andrea Berg’s imagination doesn’t go so far that she would “risk something for an adventure.” She clarifies with a laugh: ” I rarely feel erotic attraction outside of my marriage.” Playing with the possibilities, fantasy and flirtation is, however, very popular material. “It’s okay if people want to do a bit of digging on the dance floor.”

From February 2025, fans will again have plenty of opportunity to dig, indulge, celebrate, dance and reflect. Then Andrea Berg starts her new tour, which has the apt title “Party, Hits, Emotions”. Berg: “I’m Peter Pan again, and we’re going on a big dream journey together. There will be deep moments, there will be quiet and small moments, and of course there will also be big show moments. We really want to celebrate life and enjoy the moment.” In addition to the songs from the new album, of course she also has all the super hits.” And Peter Pan, that was the boy who never wanted to grow up. “I love this infantile naivety with which we can immerse ourselves in our dreams and let go,” says Andrea Berg. “The more difficult the world around us, the more important are the moments in which we can feel that lightness without being superficial. We shouldn’t go through life naively, but the soul needs to rest every now and then.” And snack on gummy bears.
