Vincent Kompany's opinions differ from time to time in public. Hermann Gerland speaks plainly about the FC Bayern coach.
Munich – Vincent Kompany is used to being in the spotlight of professional football. But his role at FC Bayern has brought him even more into the spotlight.
Kompany is experiencing his first headwinds at FC Bayern
As head coach, the former world-class central defender is one of the defining figures of the German record champions. Initially there was debate about whether Kompany had enough experience for a club like FC Bayern. However, his offensive tactics have been the focus of discussion in recent weeks.
Is it too risky for Munich that central defenders Minjae Kim and Dayot Upamecano have to advance far and cover a lot of space? Should there be additional security measures to prevent the opponent from striking after winning the ball as effectively as Eintracht Frankfurt (3:3) or FC Barcelona (1:4)?
Hermann Gerland, the former head of the youth department and assistant coach at FC Bayern, cannot understand the criticism of Kompany “at all,” as he said in an interview with Sport1 emphasizes: “This is complete nonsense. If Bayern doesn't win, there is always excitement. Then it’s completely normal for some stuff to be written.”
Gerland compares Kompany with Flick
Gerland is of the opinion that Kompany needs to get used to the media attention, but “just shouldn’t let it deter him.” Because the reality on the pitch looks different: “I saw the game in Barcelona, Bayern could have won that. Likewise against Leverkusen. The Leverkusen team shot at goal once and didn't know where to run. Bavaria was absolutely superior. Even in the three games in which they couldn’t win, Bayern played really well.”
Kompany is also convincing as a person, having received a lot of praise from Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, among others. “He is empathetic and has a connection to the team. Hansi Flick had similar qualities. Kompany has really great players and recruits them well. He keeps everyone happy, which is important. […] Kompany and Flick are very similar,” said Gerland.
The “Tiger” dares to make an initial prediction about how successfully Kompany will work in Munich: “Everything really fits with him, and I’m sure Bayern will win titles with Kompany – several titles.” The first goal is the championship, but The DFB Cup should also be brought back to Munich after the last triumph in 2020.
