In an eight-minute video, Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) officially announced his candidacy for chancellor in the federal election. “I am running as a candidate from the Greens – for the people of Germany,” said Habeck. “If you want, even as chancellor. But that’s not mine, that’s your decision. Only you can decide that.”
It had already become public in the morning that the Vice Chancellor would officially declare his candidacy on Friday. Next week, the ex-party leader of the Green Party would like to be nominated at the party conference in Wiesbaden. There are no promising opposing candidates. The candidacy had been an open secret for months.
Since the day before, Habeck has been present again on social media as a party politician. Most recently he appeared there as Federal Minister of Economics, with accounts that were maintained by the house’s employees. He is not allowed to use these state resources for the election campaign for the Greens. Habeck also opened an account again on the online service X, which he had turned his back on years ago.
In the video, Habeck openly addressed the Greens’ weak poll numbers. “I know that the traffic light government has failed. I know that trust has been broken.” He knows that “you have to earn a claim to leadership,” added the Vice Chancellor. “I want to develop it.” Above all, he wants to listen to the citizens, “what concerns them in their everyday lives, what is important to them.”
