The rains wash away around thirty vehicles in Cadaqués (Girona) without causing any victims | News from Catalonia

The intense rains that fell early this Friday in the area of Cap de Creus (Girona) have caused the sudden flooding of the stream that runs through the town of Cadaqués and the water has swept away 35 vehicles that were parked there, a channel usually dry. None of the cars have reached the sea because they have been trapped on the Casino bridge, just before the mouth. However, by blocking the outlet, the stream has overflowed and affected around twenty businesses in the area and on the promenade. When the orange alert was activated, late on Thursday afternoon, signs and a red traffic light were put up warning of the danger and prohibiting parking in the stream bed. Firefighters have confirmed that there are no injured or trapped people.

The mayor of Cadaqués, Pia Serinyana, explained that there has been almost no rain in the urban area, which has been a localized phenomenon in the mountains that surround the town. “It has rained about 100 liters per square meter, there are three streams that come from the Paní mountain, although two did not carry much water, the three have joined together in the one that runs through the town,” he detailed. According to Serinyana, at 1:30 in the morning there began to be water in the stream and the Local Police tried to alert the vehicle owners, but shortly after the flow was dropping so much that they gave up. “At three it was scary and at three thirty it had already stopped raining,” he noted.

The mayor has detailed that about twenty businesses in the town, hostels, restaurants, decoration stores, have been affected. “Little more than an inch of water and mud got into them, which they have been cleaning since early in the morning.” In some restaurants, water has damaged freezers and refrigerators, because they have the motor on the low side.

During midday this Friday, a large crane hired by the City Council has been removing the vehicles wedged under the bridge; The last ones will be removed by the municipal crane. According to Serinyana, “they have been transferred to the municipal deposit and each individual must be responsible for withdrawing it with their insurer.” The majority of those affected are residents of Cadaqués or workers, but also some tourists with rental cars.

The rains continue this Friday in sectors of Girona after the passage of the Dana along the Catalan coast. In this case they are features of instability resulting from the easterly winds that feed storms from the sea. 20 liters could fall in 30 minutes, although the Meteorological Service of Catalonia estimates that the instability will decrease.

This morning rain warnings remain in place in sectors of the northeast of Catalonia and also on the coast of Tarragona. 20 liters could fall in 30 minutes, although the Meteorological Service of Catalonia estimates that the instability will decrease. For this reason, Civil Protection has reported that it keeps the pre-alert of the flood emergency plan, Inuncat, activated in the Alt and Baix Empordà. During the weekend there may be some showers in Girona.

In the neighboring town of Port de la Selva, 117 liters per square meter have also fallen in four hours and, according to sources from the Association of Civil Protection Volunteers, the areas near the riverbank have been flooded. The Municipal Guard had to evacuate and close the Horts parking lot and rescue a neighbor from an agricultural property adjacent to the riverbank who had already gotten into a kayak.
