A commission buries the Swiss Patrol a little further

Many elected officials consider the costs of maintaining the F-5 Tiger for the Patrouille Suisse to be unjustified, given federal finances and global security.

The fate of the Patrouille Suisse remains uncertain. The Security Policy Committee of the Council of States rejected its maintenance by 6 votes to 6 with the casting vote of the president.

For the majority of the commission, the additional costs linked to maintaining the F-5 Tiger combat aircraft, used for the Patrouille Suisse, are not justified in view of the state of federal finances and the global security situation, Parliament services said in a press release on Friday.

For the minority in favor of Werner Salzmann’s motion (UDC/BE), the Patrouille Suisse constitutes a showcase for the Swiss air forces, which has great symbolic value and reinforces the will to defend itself.

The Federal Department of Defense wants to end the operation of the F-5 Tiger at the end of 2027. (jah/ats)
