National coordination unit, improvement of the repentant regime… Return to the government’s plan against drug trafficking

There will be “a before and an after”, promised the Ministers of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, and of Justice, Didier Migaud, from , during the presentation of their action plan against drug trafficking, in a joint press conference, reports Europe 1. And this, while new shootings have taken place in the territory, such as in , , and even Marseille.

“In the coming weeks,” announced Didier Migaud, a “national coordination cell” to fight against the “scourge” of drug trafficking will be set up. “I will establish in the coming weeks, in the presence of the Prime Minister, a national coordination unit responsible for taking stock of the threat, setting an operational strategy and implementing it,” said the Minister of Justice in adding: “The teams of the prosecutor's office working on the fight against organized crime at the national level (would) thus be reinforced by 40%”.

Professional magistrates. Also, Didier Migaud plans to entrust the judgment of “organized gang crimes” linked in particular to narcotics to special assize courts. They will only be composed of professional magistrates. Avoiding the use of popular juries “would remove the risk of pressure exerted on the jurors with a view to guiding the final judicial decision”, according to the Minister of Justice.

Another point: improving the protection regime for repentants. Thus, any person preventing justice from a crime will be exempted from punishment or sentenced to a lesser sentence. Didier Migaud also wants to establish “a status of collaborator of Justice”. As for the Minister of the Interior, he wants to put in place “a ban on appearing at deal points” for criminals identified by Justice.

Finally, the Minister of Justice declared that he wanted to “relax” the minority excuse for those over 16, in the most serious cases. In the event of involvement in a drug network, Didier Migaud wants immediate appearance to become applicable to those aged 16 and over.
