After violent riots on the sidelines of an Israeli football club’s away game in Amsterdam, Israel’s government wants to fly Maccabi Tel Aviv fans out, according to media reports. According to the newspaper “Times of Israel” and the news portal “Ynet”, the supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv are to be brought to safety in two planes – this is what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered, according to the reports, citing the head of government’s office. Netanyahu called on the Dutch security forces to take decisive action against perpetrators of violence and to ensure the safety of Israeli football fans.

Violent riots broke out around the football game between Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam in the Europa League against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday evening. According to police, there were riots in several places in the center of the Dutch capital – although it was not specified which side the violence came from. A total of 57 people were provisionally arrested on Thursday evening.

Several Israeli politicians spoke of disturbing scenes of violence in which pro-Palestinian perpetrators literally hunted Jews – and referred to videos on social networks. However, the recordings could not initially be verified and the Dutch police remained much more reserved in their presentation.

“There will be a pogrom in Europe in 2024,” commented Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon on X. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar wrote there: “After the serious incidents, we are in contact with the authorities in the Netherlands. Any Israeli or Jew who is currently in distress or has information about the acts of violence should contact the situation center.”
