Good performance, dramatic final minutes: TSG Hoffenheim played 2-2 (0-0) against Olympique Lyon in the UEFA Europa League on matchday 4. TSG was the dominant team in the first half, but failed to take the lead. This changed immediately after the break when Valentin Gendrey made it 1-0 after an assist from Tom Bischof (47th). Only after the goal did the guests wake up and increase the pressure, Vinicius Abner equalized in the guests’ pressure phase (66th). In stoppage time, Alexandre Lacazette scored what was supposed to be the winning goal for the guests (90+4), but TSG still had an answer ready, Umut Tohumcu scored a deserved point with a shot from the edge of the penalty area (90+5).
Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo made three changes to his starting eleven compared to the 2-0 loss against FC St. Pauli: Kevin Akpoguma, Umut Tohumcu and Max Moerstedt started in place of Stanley Nsoki, Adam Hložek and Marius Bülter.
After three matchdays, TSG Hoffenheim had four points, which put them in the middle of the table in 18th place. Lyon took six out of nine possible points in this phase and was in tenth place.
Lyon looked like the winner after Alexandre Lacazette’s goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but Umut Tohumcu secured the point with his first goal for the TSG professionals.
Third duel with Lyon, third draw. After 3:3 and 2:2 in the Champions League in the 2018/19 season, this was followed by a 2:2 in the Europa League – and in all three games, TSG equalized in stoppage time.
Tom Bischof provided the assist, but it was Max Moerstedt who made the opening goal possible. Lying on the ground, he passed the ball to Bischof, who then found Gendrey in the center.
Before the international phase, TSG Hoffenheim has an away game in the Bundesliga on Sunday. The game at FC Augsburg starts at 3:30 p.m. The Europa League continues on November 28th, when TSG will play an away game against Sporting Braga in Portugal.
