Tragedy struck the match on the 4th day of the Champions League between Bayern Munich and Benfica this Wednesday evening, marked by the tragic death of a Bavarian supporter.

As soon as kick-off, this supporter suffered a heart attack in the stands. Attempts at resuscitation failed to save him, and he died while being transported to hospital, plunging the stadium into an atmosphere of contemplation and sadness. Upon hearing the news, the Bayern ultras instantly stopped their chants and lowered their flags in the 3rd minute, as a sign of respect for the deceased and support for his family. Bayern Munich issued a statement of condolences, expressing support for the loved ones and showing the club's solidarity with its fan community.

“Difficult to talk about football”

Vincent Kompany, the Bavarian coach, spoke about this drama at the end of the match: “ It's difficult to talk about football at the moment. After the match we didn't party as usual. Of course, the players didn't notice it until after the match. We still hope that our fans and all fans return home healthy. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case today.. »

The atmosphere in the stadium changed in the second half, where only the chants of Benfica supporters resonated. The Bavarian supporters, united in a moment of contemplation, maintained silence until the end of the match. Bayern also decided to reduce their media coverage of the match, showing their respect for this loss. After the match, captain Manuel Neuer also expressed his sadness. This sober attitude reflects the solidarity of the team and its respect for the memory of the supporter. Although Bayern won 1-0, this victory was overshadowed by the tragic event.
