If 66% of French people say they are worried by Donald Trump's victory in the American presidential election, according to an interactive Toluna Harris study for RTL, in Val-d'Oise, in Beaumont-sur-Oise, some residents are far from being devastated by the return of the former president.
In a fast-food restaurant in this town, the boss installed a TV to follow the results of the election. Trump's victory speech appears and two retired women who don't know each other start debating. “Me, I think it’s very good for America.“, says Maryse. “Do you think so? It’s a disaster,” his interlocutor replies.
“I find that for the Americans, he has done quite a few things. Regarding work, he will do a lot of things“, continues Maryse. In her hand, she holds the day's newspaper with the American election on the first page and on the second page the difficulties encountered by Michelin and Auchan. “Look there, they are going to close Michelin again, Auchan which is laying off workers. I find that in France at the moment…”, she says. Maryse would like Trump's speech to resonate in France.
Next to it, the youngest are sitting with their plates. “Donald Trump won, it's a good thing, because he is anti-war. Kamala Harris, I didn’t really understand what she wanted to do,” explains one of them.
The restaurant owner smiles. He recalls that the poverty rate in this city is higher than the national averagemany therefore recognize themselves in Donald Trump's speech. “The pragmatists thought they would win. It marks everyone,” he concludes.
