The highlights of the game in the video:
First the sounded Kick-off by referee Davide Massa with a 15 minute delay only around 9:15 p.m. (live ticker for reading). The reason: Signal box malfunctions on the subwaymany fans didn’t make it to the stadium in time. When the game began, the German record champions appeared dominant from the start with the certainty that they actually had to win in order to advance directly to the round of 16. However, the impact was often lacking.
So it took until deep into the second half before “Header monster” Jamal Musiala redeemed his colors with the decisive goal in the 67th minute. Leroy Sané and Harry Kane provided the template. Even after that it remained a difficult game for Bayern, who often had the ball for a long time, but rarely came dangerously into the opponent’s penalty area.
Death in the stadium overshadows victory
In the end, Bayern were able to three extremely important points for the Champions League table – but this was completely pushed into the background during the night. Because FC Bayern published some very sad news: A fan collapsed in the stadium during the game and died shortly afterwardsit said. Initially there was talk of a “medical emergency”. “Around an hour after the final whistle, the German record champions received the sad news that the fan had died on the way to hospital. FC Bayern is with the relatives in mourning.” According to a report in the Bild newspaper, an “elderly man” suffered a heart attack in the stands of Block 226.
Voices and reactions of those involved:
Vincent Kompany (Trainer FC Bayern): “It is also important for us to win like this. In the past we always scored three, four or five goals, but in the end we stayed quiet today. We have Shot on goal 24 times and the opponent only once. Even though not every shot we made was dangerous, we controlled the game. There are sometimes games in which the last pass isn’t quite as clean. We know that we can decide games in the first five minutes if we’re in a good mood, but that wasn’t the case today. But ultimately this is the Champions League – and it was a good game and a good win (…).”
Bruno Lage (Trainer Benfica Lissabon): “When Bayern play at home, they often have a lot of possession. We knew we had to defend. Our plan was to be able to create something with the ball. We wanted to have more control and could have acted better in some transition moments.”
Jamal Musiala (goal scorer FC Bayern): “We had good moments, but the opponent also did well and defended well. Of course there are still things we can do better. But it is important that we got the three points. I don’t know what’s going on with my headersbut the ball fell well a few times and I keep trying to get into good positions to score easy goals (…).”
Max Eberl (FC Bayern sports director): “Those were important three pointswe had to bring them in! But it was also a complicated game: Benfica didn’t want to play football, just defend. They did this in a very structured way. But we always stayed on the trigger, didn’t let anything happen – and were rewarded: 1-0 is the best victories!” (mw)
