Unlike Claudia Sheinbaum who established herself in Mexico as the first North American president a few weeks ago, Kamala Harrislike Hillary Clinton in 2016, stumbled on the last obstacle.

Pour the second time in eight yearsa woman candidate for the White House failed to be elected at the head of the world's leading power.

Donald Trump is therefore elected President of the United States for the second time. Not re-elected, since in 2020, at the end of his first term, the Republican lost to Democrat Joe Biden.

An increasingly sexist American society

If these defeats are obviously due to the personality and popularity of their opponent, Donald Trump in both cases, for many observers, the question of misogyny of American society is also a factor.

Indeed, over the past seven years, according toAmerican Enterprise Institutethe proportion of young men who believe that the United States has gone “too far” in promoting gender equality more than doubled.

Donald Trump bet on the codes virilistes and his entire campaign was peppered with insulting or contemptuous comments towards women, coming from him or his political and media relays.

The Democrat did not openly campaign on the fact that she could become the first president of the United States.

She supported women's freedoms, in particular making the right to abortion one of the cornerstones of her campaign. But that apparently wasn't enough to rally enough moderate conservative women, as she hoped.

This American election is one of the most gendered in history. According to data from the Reuters agency put into infographics by the BBC54% of women voted for Kamala Harris. Among Donald Trump voters, 54% are men.

Do not talk to deep America… nor to billionaires

Where the outcome of the elections is largely at stake is in the swing states. These states which are neither Democratic nor Republican, whose vote we do not know in advance, unlike the very Democratic California or the very Republican Texas.

As eight years ago against Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump relied on these states, sometimes in industrial decline, such as Pennsylvania or Michigan.

“We must recognize Donald Trump’s good intuitions on this subject. These speeches have echoes in deep Americain which a population crushed by globalization lives,” indicated Yannick Mireur, writer and specialist in American politics, to actu.fr.

However, Kamala Harris' program of a more protective State, particularly for the health system or to invest more in education, may have raised fears of an increase in taxes.

A blitz?

It should also be remembered that Kamala Harris only became the Democratic Party candidate last August after the withdrawal of the (still) President of the United States, Joe Biden. The one who had to make up for the blunders of “Joe the Goofball” only had a few months to breathe new life into the campaign.

And show your own personality. Not easy in the face of a character like Donald Trump, a fan of provocation and small phrases.
