UNITED STATES – Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester make American History. These two Democrats were elected to the US Senate, according to the results declared by the AP agency. For the first time, two black women will sit at the same time in this chamber, a crucial organ of federal power, which changed overnight to a Republican majority.

Change of coat for Lisa Blunt Rochester who goes from deputy to senator. The Democrat won in Delaware by more than 56% against her main Republican opponent, Eric Hansen, and independent candidate Mike Katz. She was already the first woman and the first black woman to represent Delaware in the House of Representatives where she had served since 2016. I'm not doing this to make history. I'm doing this to make a difference.” she told NBC News. In the Senate, she succeeds Tom Carper, who had also designated her as his successor.

For her part, Angela Alsobrooks won in Maryland, 52% against Larry Hogan of the Republican Party. A resounding victory in a state rather won by the Democrats, but where the campaign was particularly difficult and even became a national issue. Opposite, Larry Hogan had arguments including two successful terms as governor. He had also distanced himself from Trump during the campaign, particularly on the issue of abortion rights. A rhetoric against which the Democrats fought fiercely.

To date, only three times have black women been elected senators in all of American history. But Carol Moseley Braun, Laphonza Butler and a certain Kamala Harris never sat together. “I would like to salute all those who came before me and who allowed me to take this stage this evening”said Angela Alsobrooks after her victory.

According to ABC, Joe Biden himself called Rochester and Alsobrooks to congratulate them.
