After Donald Trump’s victory in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia and North Carolina, one thing is certain: the Republican has achieved the required majority of voters and will be the next US President.
The Republican candidate Donald Trump has won the US presidential election. With the ten voters from the swing state Wisconsin, he got the necessary majority. According to data from Reuters/Edison Research, the 78-year-old has so far been able to gather a total of 279 voters – 270 would have been enough.
In addition to the victory in Wisconsin, the Republican was also able to win the similarly contested states of Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina. Relatively early on election evening it was clear that Trump had won in the states where his victory was already considered certain – such as Florida, Iowa and South Carolina. The results in states with a total of 36 electors are still pending.
Harris cancels appearance
As expected, the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris also prevailed in a number of states, including New York, Massachusetts and Illinois. However, so far she has not been able to win any of the swing states that decide the election – counting is still ongoing in three such states, but Harris is behind Trump there too. In total, she has so far received 223 electoral votes.
Harris, a Democratic candidate who wanted to be the first woman to enter the White House, is once again defeated by Trump. In 2016, he surprisingly defeated former US Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton.
An appearance by Harris at the Democratic election party in Washington was canceled. “You won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow,” said Cedric Richmond of the Harris campaign. The Harris camp has not yet commented on Trump’s election victory.
Trump celebrates election victory in Florida
Trump had already declared himself the winner during an appearance in front of cheering supporters in the US state of Florida. The Republicans had achieved a political victory “the likes of which have never been seen before in this country,” he said.
Trump took the stage at the West Palm Beach Convention Center alongside his family and his vice presidential running mate JD Vance and shouted to his supporters: “We made history tonight for a reason, and that reason is simply that we overcame obstacles “What no one would have thought possible.”
Tesla boss Elon Musk, who supported Trump with more than 100 million euros and campaign appearances, was also on stage. Trump has promised the billionaire an important role in the future government.
Republican Majority in the Senate
The Republicans have achieved decisive success not only in the presidential election, but also in voting for seats in the US Senate. They conquered the majority in the Congress Chamber that had previously been held by Democrats. If they can also defend the majority in the House of Representatives, Trump can rule through.
With victory in the Senate election, the Republicans could also cement the conservative majority in the Supreme Court and thus shape the USA for decades. Judges on the Supreme Court and other federal courts are appointed for life.
Trump improves scores among blacks and Latinos
The ex-president scored points in the election campaign with promises such as halving energy costs and fueled fears of an alleged “invasion of criminal migrants.” He did better among blacks and Latinos, traditionally a Democratic bastion, compared to the previous election four years ago. Harris, on the other hand, was able to win significantly more women, according to surveys.
Trump’s election victory sparked different reactions around the world. In keeping with custom, many heads of state and government congratulated the Republican, ranging from diplomatic and wait-and-see to enthusiastic, depending on their political stance.
