Oh no, Trump is back

Trump isn’t even charismatic anymore. In four years, he has become a caricature of himself, a narcissistic character, misogynist, racist, conspiracy theorist, climate skeptic and – above all – a head of state described as unpredictable and incompetent. In a word: grotesque. Donald Trump is not only a New York real estate tycoon, he is also a criminal found guilty of 34 offenses in the case of accounting falsifications linked to the secret payments of porn actress Stormy Daniels. He was also found responsible by a civil court for sexual assault on a journalist. His re-election will spare him a stint in prison, and will undoubtedly allow him to put an end to four other criminal proceedings for the assault on the Capitol, electoral fraud in Georgia in 2020, concealment of classified documents and fraudulent overvaluation of assets.

Donald Trump elected president: What can we now expect in the conflict in Ukraine?

Never has a presidential election been at once indecisive, electric and crucial. For the United States and for the World. It is above all the inflation of almost 21% over 4 years, and the surge in real estate prices, which has restored the republican’s image among distraught young people, bewildered parents or retirees lacking prospects. The desperation of the middle class is palpable across the country, from cities to distant and isolated countrysides. Americans’ lifestyles have fallen sharply and traumaticly in four years.

It is impossible not to highlight the enormous error of the Democrats in this election. They let the 81-year-old outgoing president, Joe Biden, get bogged down in a delicate campaign despite a disputed record and poor physical and mental health. Contrary to his promises, the man did not manage to unify the country after the chaotic election of 2020. After the Covid crisis which undermined the American economy, his administration succeeded – certainly with the help of a jackpot of 1.900 billion dollars – to boost employment, increase wages and reduce student debt, but the surge in fuel and housing costs is such that the statistics seem almost rigged. Worse, a widely contested migration policy worries many citizens. Add to this a geopolitical influence at half mast, after a chaotic withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, new diplomatic tensions with China, Israel and Iran, and we will understand that the Americans do not applaud such a presidential assessment. Democratic Party leaders opened their eyes too late, way too late.

“A dark day for democracy”, “free-ride is over”…: Belgian politicians react to Donald Trump’s victory

Closer to home, Washington’s massive military and financial aid to Ukraine remained essential to resisting the Russian invasion. There probably won’t be much left… For Donald Trump, it’s still “America First”. The interest of the country takes precedence over any other military, commercial, industrial or even environmental consideration. Its plan to introduce significant customs tariffs is entirely in line with this logic. In every misfortune, something is good: Europeans must finally and collectively acknowledge that their future will depend only on themselves, and on their ability to unite and grow together. The start is now.
