Emmanuel Macron officially appoints Pierre-Marie Abadie as president of the future Nuclear Safety Authority

This person familiar with energy issues is the current director general of the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management.

It does not really exist yet but it already has its leader. Emmanuel Macron has officially appointed Pierre-Marie Abadie as president of the controversial and future Nuclear Safety Authority. A decree was published in the Official Journal on Wednesday November 6, specifying that he would take office from November 13.

The future nuclear authority will merge the nuclear watchdog, the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), with the sector's technical expert, the Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN). On October 23, parliamentarians validated the candidacy of Pierre-Marie Abadie, the current director general of the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (Andra).

Since 2014, he has headed this organization which is the contracting authority for the Cigéo project for the deep burial of the most radioactive waste from the French nuclear fleet. However, this project planned for Bure, in the Meuse, and initiated by the government in 2006, is currently under investigation by ASN, the nuclear safety watchdog.
