Sequence… acquisition. The show may have disappeared from the screens for more than ten years, but Ushuaïa is a brand that is still as attractive as ever. According to the online media the InformedTF1 has sold part of the rights linked to its cult show from the 1990s and 2000s, popularized by Nicolas Hulot, to the French cosmetics giant L’Oréal. This concerns the rights relating to the use of the brand for its ranges of shower gels, deodorants and shampoos. But also those for the many other products derived from the brand. The sum paid by the French manufacturer reached 27.5 million euros, mentions the latest activity report of the TF1 group. Since the 1990s, under a license granted at the time by the first PAF channel, the group has paid TF1, the sole owner of the brand, royalties to appear in the bathrooms of the French.
Multiple derivative products
«L’transfer agreement concerns all classes of products and services (of Ushuaïa Editor’s note) with the exception of those relating to audiovisual, entertainment and hotel activities”details the TF1 activity report. For thirty years, the front page has made the exploitation of the Ushuaïa brand a real business. In particular by developing audiovisual concepts such as Ushuaïa TV as well as books and magazines. But also hotel concepts like Ushuaïa Villages, managed by TF1 Licensing. Launched this year, following the licensing of another of its flagship Camping Paradis programs, the concept already has around twenty village campsites in France. TF1 will retain its rights to these activities relating to its core business.
