According to preliminary results from a national survey conducted for NBC News, 35% of voters surveyed said the state of American democracy was the most important factor in their vote choice, while 31% cited the 'economy.
Abortion (14%) and immigration (11%) come next, followed by foreign policy (4%), this poll indicates.
Different priorities depending on the electorates
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump voters do not have the same priorities. For supporters of the former Republican president, it is the economy (51%) which represents the first reason for voting. For those of the Democratic vice-president, it is democracy (56%).
“Exit poll results may change overnight as interviews and vote counting continue,” NBC News warns.
Other media outlets have published their first exit polls. A CNN survey gives similar results to that of NBC News regarding voting reasons. It also shows that a majority of voters voted “for” their candidate, and not “against” the one they reject.
This same poll shows the frustration of American voters. 43% say they are “dissatisfied” with the state of their country and 29% “angry”.
