“Pure horror,” say witnesses who saw it happen. They receive psychological help to deal with the tragedy that they could not prevent.
The terrible facts took place on Monday near the La Tonnelle restaurant in the center of Yvoir and near the banks of the Meuse.
Hagos T. (22) from Eritrea, in eastern Africa, was talking to other asylum seekers from the Red Cross reception center when a man suddenly showed up. In front of the others, he took out a knife and attacked the woman. In one movement he slit her throat. He then grabbed the profusely bleeding woman and threw her into the Meuse.
Then the man, who had also brought friends, took off running.
Lots of blood lost
Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene and divers were able to remove the woman from the cold water. But help could no longer help. She had already lost too much blood.
The Namur public prosecutor’s office is sparing with comments for the time being and does not want to say whether a suspect has already been arrested. But everything would point to her ex-boyfriend.
Other residents of the asylum center say Hagos moved in with her partner in April. But the relationship broke down this summer and heated arguments arose. Her ex-boyfriend was then transferred to another shelter.
But he clearly couldn’t cope with the break, other asylum seekers say.
The Federal Judicial Police (PJF) of Namur is conducting the investigation.
