Harris wins in Vermont, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, Illinois and New Jersey.
The election of the US President does not take place through a direct popular vote, but through the Electoral College. Based on population, each state has a certain number of votes, and most states (except Maine and Nebraska) award all of their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the state in the popular vote. To win, a candidate needs at least 270 of the total 538 Electoral College votes.
Several populous states that have large numbers of electoral votes, like California (55) or Texas (38), are still voting.
The seven states predicted to play a decisive role in the election are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. There, the election fight between candidates was the most competitive.
