Women Press Freedom Condemns Harassment of RTL Luxembourg Journalist Annick Goerens at US Election Event — Coalition For Women in Journalism

Women Press Freedom strongly condemns the recent violation of press rights experienced by RTL Luxembourg journalist Annick Goerens while covering the U.S. elections. Goerens’ application for press credentials to attend a Republican event hosted by JD Vance was denied without explanation, forcing her to secure a general admission pass instead.

During the event, Goerens faced harassment and intimidation from event organizers and attendees who labeled her as unwelcome. This hostile environment, marked by verbal abuse and threats, is an alarming example of the increasing hostility towards journalists, particularly those seeking to report on political events objectively. Despite her attempts to clarify her role as a journalist, she was met with resistance and ultimately felt compelled to seek protection from law enforcement.

These incidents are indicative of a troubling trend that undermines the freedom of the press and the essential role of journalists in our democracy.

Our comprehensive report indicates that if Trump were to become president again, journalists would encounter unparalleled suppression, leading to the dismantling of press freedom.

Women Press Freedom stands in solidarity with Annick Goerens and all journalists who face challenges in their pursuit of truth and transparency. We call on political organizations and their supporters to respect the rights of journalists and ensure that they can perform their duties without fear of harassment or violence.

We urge all stakeholders to foster an environment where media professionals can operate freely, enabling them to inform the public and contribute to the democratic process.
