Tom Boonen has had a rich cycling career. Yet he is left feeling worse about one specific thing.
Lotte Kopecky is at home in many markets. She likes to try new things. Next year she will opt for the Amstel and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
In a major interview with Het Nieuwsblad with Ine Beyen, Tom Boonen and Patrick Lefevere, the former rider had a particularly interesting question for cycling icon Tom Boonen.
“I wanted to put that to you, Tom. Lotte indeed says: ‘I want to do other things than the Ronde and Roubaix. But would you ever have tried to reinvent yourself like that?”
To which Boonen immediately admits that he regrets one thing. “I do regret that I never rode the Amstel. In the good years, when you really had a finish for sprinters. The same for Liège-Bastogne-Liège, with the finish in Liège.”
“As a promise, I was second there after Ruslan Gryschenko. But over the years there have been more and more climbs and it was over for an 80-kilo person like me. The years of hyper-specialization have come.”
