Manchester City were handed their first Premier League defeat of the season last weekend with a 2-1 loss at Bournemouth.
In what has been a recurring theme of the campaign, City conceded in the first 10 minutes of the match against the Cherries through Antoine Semenyo.
Pep Guardiola’s side then conceded a second goal in the 64th minute before Josko Gvardiol bagged a consolation goal before the full-time whistle.
This consolation goal saw Gvardiol draw level with Mohammed Salah and Nicolas Jackson for the number of Premier League away goals scored (6) in 2024.
Following the match on the South Coast, another figure in City’s squad found himself being mentioned for what happened to him on the pitch on that occasion.
Troy Deeney makes Kyle Walker claim after Bournemouth defeat
Having included Semenyo in his latest BBC Sport team of the week, Deeney gave this assessment of the Bournemouth attacker and what he did to Kyle Walker.
He said: “The player of the weekend by far. He dominated Kyle Walker. I’ll put it down to this – Walker played a 6/10 and Semenyo was 9.5/10.
“I don’t think Semenyo will have a better game – everything he touched landed at his feet. He got himself a goal. He bodied Walker at one stage, put him on the ground.
“We’ve all had those games – if you’re Kyle you think “stay away from me.”
Walker’s poor league record this season
Looking back over the match against Andoni Iraola’s side, the 34-year-old ended up getting dribbled past on three occasions as well as losing nine of the 13 duels he was involved in.
He also earned himself a yellow card and gave possession away 16 times in total, further highlighting how much of a bad day Walker had.
After the defeat, Guardiola said Walker hadn’t trained regularly in the lead-up to the match, which may explain why he had such a tough time against Semenyo.
Fixture | Result | Minutes played |
West Ham United vs Man City | 1-3 | 2 |
Man City vs Brentford | 2-1 | 90 |
Man City vs Arsenal | 2-2 | 78 |
Newcastle United vs Man City | 1-1 | 90 |
Man City vs Fulham | 3-2 | 28 |
Bournemouth vs Man City | 2-1 | 90 |
Dealing with injury issues this season, Walker has only seen City win one of the four league matches he’s started in this latest campaign.
While it would be unfair to put the entire blame for City’s dropped points this season on Walker, Guardiola may have to consider what sort of role the full-back has in the team going forward.
