Álvaro Morata: “I expect whistles at the Bernabéu… that’s normal”

Álvaro Morata arrived at AC Milan this summer. The former Colchonero started with a supersub role until Tammy Abraham suffered a shoulder injury. The Englishman had a complicated start to the season and struggled to find the net. The Spanish striker thus took over and fully satisfied Paulo Fonseca.

He's not a killer either and has only scored two goals, but he brings other things, starting with desire, pressing and runs that attract defenders. He is a player who is not always well understood, but this season, he is in his place. The savior of the Milan club is Christian Pulisic, already the author of 7 goals in all competitions, in just 12 matches. Morata is in the role he prefers, serving the collective.

It's hard to get more Madrid than Álvaro Morata. A native of the capital, he went from Atlético de Madrid to Real Madrid during his training, then went the other way during his professional career. Each time, he had the courtesy of passing through another club between his successive re-moves to Madrid.

For this Tuesday's match at 9 p.m. against Real Madrid in the Champions League, he knows that he is expected to be around the corner, as he concedes to The Athletic: “in the end I think it will be the same as when I came back with Atleti. I don't think things have changed much. But I'm aware of it and I expect people to whistle at me and everything. It’s normal.”

Rodri won the Ballon d'Or just a week ago. Álvaro Morata was La Roja's starting striker when they won Euro 2024, the major title that made the Spanish midfielder's candidacy for this award possible.

During this interview, he also gave his opinion to the online sports daily his opinion on the result of this trophy: “I expected Rodri to win it. Today it is a great achievement for Spain to have Rodri on the pitch in the same way as Sergio Busquets before him. He also deserved a Golden Ball. Players like them don't stand out as a striker or winger, but they control the Spanish game. They are the architects of our game.”

He was also asked about his opinion on the candidacy of Dani Carvajal (4th) this year: “I wouldn't have cared if one or the other had won the Ballon d'Or. They are both Spanish, they are friends. I would have been happy if Carvajal had won. We have known each other since we were children. I'm proud of him, the way he works and the way he approaches life. I would have been just as happy for him. There are players from other teams from other countries who also deserve it, but I am Spanish and there is no greater pride than seeing a Spanish player at the top of the world.”
