Stade Brestois’ chances of reaching the playoffs thanks to their strong start to the campaign

The Brest Stadium makes a historic Champions League debut. After three games, the team is in an enviable position, in fifth place with 7 points. With two wins and a draw, the hopes of qualifying for the round of 16 are very real.

The new Champions League format

The Champions League introduced a new format this season. The latter brings together all the teams in a single league of 36 teams. Here are the new rules:

  • THE Top 8 teams automatically qualify for the round of 16.
  • The teams of the 9th to 24th place will play a two-leg play-off to join the top eight in the round of 16.
  • THE Last 12 teams (from 25th to 36th place) are eliminated from all European competitions.

With this new format, teams must now reach at least 24th place to hope to continue their adventure in the Champions League.

Points objectives to qualify

According to the projections of thechoosehere are the recommended point thresholds for the different qualification objectives:

  • 16 points (five wins and one draw) should almost guarantee a place in the top 8, synonymous with direct qualification for the round of 16.
  • 15 points (five wins) have a 73% probability of securing a top-eight spot.
  • 10 points (three wins and a draw) should be enough to reach 24th place, which would guarantee at least a place in the play-off.

To avoid any early elimination, Brest will therefore have to aim for a minimum of three victories. Seven points probably won’t be enough, and every extra point will be crucial.

Qualifying scenarios for Stade Brestois

With 7 points in three matches, Stade Brestois is in a good position. The next match for Brest will be November 5, 2024, away against Sparta Prague. A victory or even a draw would significantly strengthen their position in the rankings.

  1. Victory against Sparta Prague : Brest would reach 10 points, which would almost guarantee a place in the play-offs with a 69% chance of qualification. They would then be close to a place in the top 8.
  2. Draw against Sparta Prague : One extra point would give them 8 points.
  3. Defeat : In the event of defeat, Brest would remain at 7 points and would be in danger of seeing its position fall.
