A 4,000m² pavilion, the Feria València usually hosts trade fairs and exhibitions. It was transformed into a morgue that could accommodate up to 400 bodies.
The first bodies arrived on Friday, once the first autopsies were carried out.
“At first there was a morgue set up for around 100 victims, but we quickly realized that it would not be enough,” explained Javier Marcos, head of the Military Emergency Unit (UME).
The courts have already authorized the handing over of “nearly fifty bodies” of the deceased to their families, indicated the Superior Court of Justice of Valencia.
In addition, this building also serves as a military base camp, with 2,500 people who can be accommodated on camp beds.
