The death toll from Dana’s passage through Spain has so far reached 217 deaths, but what particularly frightens the population are the missing. “Dozens and dozens“, say the authorities. Probably an understatement. This Monday, the search continues in the parking lot of a shopping center that can accommodate hundreds of cars.
Using pumps, drones and inflatable boats, emergency services now empty and then inspect private underground car parks or supermarkets. One of them particularly attracts attention: the parking lot of the Bonaire shopping center in Aldaia, near Valencia. Rescuers were only able to begin accessing it this Sunday, five days after the flood.
“In the parking lot the water level is still high and that is why we are carrying out the preliminary heavy machinery work, to remove the first layers of water and mud, so that we can enter“, said Saturday Lieutenant David Escribano, of the parachute squadron of Alcantarilla in Las Provincias, a regional media of Valencia.
His team tried to enter the parking lot on Saturday, but the water was still too high. On social networks, an image published on Saturday shows the entrance to the car park where the water is at ground floor level, raising fears of the worst.
This parking lot, which extends over more than 2,000 square meters, would have been submerged under 200 million liters of water according to estimates. Thanks to pumping, emergency services managed to extract two million liters per hour.
