After the destructive floods The Spanish royal couple felt the anger and desperation of the people during a visit to the disaster area. “Murderers,” people shouted at King Felipe VI on Sunday in the particularly hard-hit community of Paiporta near Valencia. and his wife Letizia.

This was reported by a reporter from the AFP news agency. Angry people also threw mud and objects at the king.

The royal couple traveled to Paiporta, west of the coastal metropolis of Valencia, together with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and regional president Carlos Mazón. In the crisis center there, Felipe got an idea of the situation, as the royal family reported on the online service X. The community of Chiva was then on the visit program.

The mood in the town, which was one of the worst devastated, was very tense, state broadcaster RTVE reported. The royal couple tried to talk to the people who approached the group and calm them down. The royal couple’s visit was also overshadowed by the threat of further heavy rain. The Spanish meteorological agency Aemet issued a second-highest level orange warning for the Valencia region due to new heavy rains. Accordingly, 100 liters of rain per square meter could fall in some places.

A red alert has even been declared for the province of Almería in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia: This means extreme danger. The area, which is popular with tourists, must therefore expect flooding due to heavy rain.

Extreme rain fell in the east and south of Spain on Tuesday. In some places it rained more than usual in a whole year. The flood disaster is the worst in Spain in decades.
